Ok, you're being WAY too nitpicky. Even though you (and I) are die-hard Star Trek fans, we must realize that this is a series revamp that caters to a completely different demographic than TOS, much like BSG. So yes, it's not so much a sci-fi movie but more an action flick set in space. As for the casting, the actors chose to keep true to the Star Trek characters through THEIR eyes rather than mimic the actors playing them. Anton Yelchin (who is actually Russian btw) portrayed Chekov through his research in this series rather than try to be Walter Koenig (which he would have never accomplished), which would have just made a caricature of the character. Again, revamp. Maybe Chekov has a thicker accent because he's only 17 and recently immigrated to attend Starfleet Academy from the mother country.
As for Uhura & Spock, that caught me offguard too but, like you said, it's an altered timeline/alternate universe now, so anything is possible. One thing I'm surprised you didn't mention is the fact that the Enterprise was seen being built on Earth rather than in space. Then again, you don't have that much of a neckbeard to be THAT geeky. All in all I think the movie did what it set out to do; entertain and keep the franchise alive.
What makes me sad is...now that this film has be released, with Trekdom become mainstream, much like gaming has, and therefore become hip, cool, and trendy to wear com badges? Will hipsters give a Vulcan salute when they see each other at tam-tams on the plateau? This bothers me...
Oh and something worth mentioning for all the major geeks out there... They copied certain sound effects from Babylon 5, the new phasers on the Enterprise are from the B5 Starfuries..... Heresy, indeed.
Welcome to SuperSlappy, my dominion over all things geeky. Good, bad and awesome alike. Here I will review, preview and simply babble on the subject of whatever the hell I like. Feel free to comment and discuss.
